The dictionary

A 660,644-entry English dictionary, fully offline

Wordwren's English dictionary covers 660,644 lemma entries — every one bundled with the app, so search works before you've ever opened a network connection. Look up a word and you get its part of speech, definitions grouped by sense with usage labels (informal, dated, regional, and so on), example sentences, IPA pronunciation, and a spoken audio button. Type an inflected form like "running" and the dictionary redirects you to "run" automatically. Definitions are in English for every language at launch; native-language definition packs are planned as a future update.

Flashcards & spelling

Two tracks for every word

Meaning and spelling are scheduled separately, because knowing a word and being able to spell it are different skills — plenty of words you recognize instantly are the ones you'd never spell right unprompted.

Flashcards (meaning)

A simple swipe deck. The front shows the word the way you saved it; tap to flip and see the headword, any form note ("past tense of run"), and its definitions. Swipe right if you knew it, left if you didn't — binary, no partial credit, no configuration. Each session is every card due today, shuffled.

Spelling trainer

For each due word, Wordwren shows its definitions and example sentences with the headword itself starred out wherever it would appear (so the examples can't give the answer away), then plays the word aloud and lets you replay it. You type what you heard; an exact, case-insensitive match counts as correct, and anything else shows a character-by-character diff of what you missed. Both tracks feed the same five-box Leitner schedule described above, and correct or incorrect answers never auto-graduate a word out of rotation — that's always your call.

Your words

Custom words for anything a dictionary doesn't have

Slang, names, technical jargon, a phrase from a book — if a search comes up empty, Wordwren offers to add it as a custom word with an optional note you write yourself. Custom words train in the exact same flashcard and spelling sessions as dictionary words, side by side, with the same independent meaning and spelling tracking.

Export & import

Your list, in a plain JSON file

One export writes your entire saved-words list — including progress on both tracks, lookup history, and settings — to a single JSON file through the standard iOS share sheet. Importing merges by headword: where a word exists on both sides, the higher box and any mastered status win, and you get a summary before anything is applied. It's a plain, readable file you control, useful for backups or moving to a new device.

Themes that switch instantly

Pick between the warm Cream theme and a Warm Dark theme in Settings, with more planned. Switching is instant and remembered the next time you open the app — no restart required.

Language

An interface in 47 locales

The app's interface — menus, buttons, settings — is localized into 47 locales, separate from the 57 dictionary languages you can look words up in. You could run the app in a French interface while building a Japanese vocabulary, for instance. UI translations start machine-translated at launch and are refined over time.
